Hex Head Lag Screws
- Hex Head Lag Screws are also commonly referred to as Lag Bolts due to the large size and the hexagonal head.
- Hex Head Lag Screws are available in Zinc Plating for moderate corrosion resistance, Hot Dipped Galvanized for higher corrosion resistance, and Stainless Steel for the highest level of corrosion resistance. Both Galvanized and Stainless are for use in marine and outdoor applications and with any type of treated lumber. We also sell Plain Finish in full cartons, these are uncoated bolts that arrive with an oil coating to prevent corrosion.
- The true length of many bolts can commonly be up to 3/16" short of the stated length.
- Lag Screws are used in wood construction, and can also be used it masonry and other hard materials in conjunction with Lag Shield Anchors in pre-drilled holes.
- Pilot holes are typically recommended for all sizes of Lag Bolts, this prevents excess stress on the screw which can cause the head to break off. The pilot hole should generally be the full length of the screw. The size of hole should be the same as the diameter of the inside of the threads, plus or minus 1/16" depending on the hardness of the wood and the length of the screw. On longer screws a slightly larger lead hole for the unthreaded shank of the screw may also be beneficial.
- It is also recommended to use some type of lubricant on the threads to ease installation of the screw. Avoid using anything that has any kind of water content (i.e. soap) to prevent accelerated corrosion, vegetable oil or beeswax are sometimes suggested.
